This 1978 Jaguar XJ6L is a long-wheelbase model that is powered by a 4.2-liter straight-six paired with a Tremec T5 five-speed manual transmission. Features include a 7″ headlamp conversion, Euro-spec turn signals, air conditioning, and a factory radio. The car spent time in New Jersey and West Virginia before being acquired by the seller in 2004 and subsequently relocated to Florida. Work performed during current ownership is said to have included a repaint in red and the installation of doeskin leather seats from a later model XJ6, as well as replacement of the clutch, water pump, fuel injectors, brake pads, shocks, springs, and engine and transmission mounts. This Series II XJ is now offered with parts receipts, spare parts, and a clean Florida title in the seller’s name.

Previously finished in silver, the long-wheelbase body received a driver-quality repaint in a Lexus shade of red in 2007. Paint imperfections on the hood were repaired by the seller, and rust repair completed during previous ownership reportedly included replacing the sills and floors as well as areas of the wheel arches, doglegs, and lower portions of the doors and fenders. Modifications include a 7″ headlamp conversion, Euro-spec turn signals, and a front bumper from a 1974 XJ6. The removed exterior parts are included in the sale, and the seller notes a paint blister on each of the front doors and scuffs on the rear bumper.

The 15″ steel wheels wear polished hubcaps and are mounted with 215/70 Michelin Defender tires. The seller has reportedly replaced the shocks, springs, master cylinder, sway bar bushings, and brake pads over the last 16 years.

The beige doeskin leather seats were reportedly sourced from a Series III XJ6, and the cabin features a replacement headliner, wood trim, door panels, and seatbelts. The A/C system has been overhauled and converted to R134a, though the seller notes a refrigerant leak. The center dash vent is stuck in the open position, and cracks are present on the glove box. A set of spare later-model door panels is included in the sale.

Chrome ringed-gauges consist of a 140-mph speedometer, a 5,500-rpm tachometer, and gauges monitoring fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and voltage. The five-digit odometer shows just under 9k miles, though total mileage is unknown. Approximately 10k miles have been added during current ownership.

The 4.2-liter straight-six features Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection and has been fitted with a gear reduction starter and a stakedown kit. Additional work during current ownership is said to include a refurbished radiator and a replacement water pump, thermostat, fuel injectors, hoses, fuel and heater valves, and air filter. The seller notes the oil pan’s drain has damaged threads, and the drain plug has been sealed in place.

A Tremec T5 five-speed manual transmission was installed in place of the factory three-speed automatic gearbox during previous ownership. A replacement clutch was reportedly installed during current ownership, along with new engine, transmission, and subframe mounts. Some corrosion is on the underbody.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
