This 1973 Jaguar XJ12 is a non-driving project that remained registered in New England until it was acquired by the seller’s parents in 2018 as a candidate for refurbishment. Finished in silver over black leather upholstery, the car is equipped with a 5.3-liter V12 and a three-speed automatic transmission. Details consist of 15″ steel wheels, chrome bumpers and trim, green-tinted glass, and wood veneer trim. The engine starts and runs, but the transmission does not shift into reverse, portions of the exhaust system are missing, the brake system requires service, the power steering system is empty, and the electrical system requires repairs. This XJ12 project is now offered at no reserve by the seller on behalf of their mother with a collection of spare parts, registration documents dating back to the 1980s, partial service records, manufacturer’s literature, period articles, and a clean Iowa title in the owner’s name.

Silver paint finishes the exterior, and details include chrome bumpers with overriders, green-tinted glass, and inoperative quad headlights. The windshield wipers do not work, multiple lights are burnt out, and photos of a dent in the hood and exterior imperfections are visible.

Chrome-plated 15″ steel wheels with black accents are mounted with older mixed-brand tires, and the car is equipped with front and rear independent suspension. The front lower ball joint boots are deteriorating along with the right steering rack boot. The power steering system is empty, and the brake fluid is contaminated and requires flushing.

The bucket seats and the rear bench are upholstered in black leather. Wood veneer trim accents the dashboard and doors, and black carpets line the footwells. There are splits in the seating surfaces, the headliner has been removed.

A two-spoke steering wheel fronts a 160-mph Smiths speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline, and supplementary gauges are mounted in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 43k miles. Multiple dashboard lights and indicators are inoperative.

The 5.3-liter V12 is equipped with four Zenith-Stromberg carburetors. The carburetors were removed and cleaned within the last year, and the seller tells us the floats and metering needles were replaced at that time. One of the right-side carburetors is missing an idle adjustment screw. Aftermarket fuel pumps were installed in February 2025 and the starter was rebuilt at that time. The cooling hoses will require replacement, the oil sump is overfilled, and the electrical system is in need of repairs, per the seller.

The three-speed automatic transmission was removed in late 2024, per the seller, and the ring gear, torque converter seal, and pan gasket were replaced at that time. Following the work, the transmission does not engage in reverse. The center sections of the exhaust system have rusted away, and replacement exhaust components are included in the sale.

The data plate above shows a car number of UD1P51238BW, while the current Iowa title lists a VIN of UD1P51238B.

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
