Auction description:

Vintage Motor Cars at Amelia Island
13 March 2004
Lot 192
1971 Jaguar XJ6 Series I Saloon
Sold for $15,400
Chassis no. 1L61713BW

Built as a showpiece for his wife by the consignor who is the chairman of a well known Jaguar restoration and racing shop, this XJ-6 sports many improvements from standard. The body restoration began with a strip to bare metal after which the perfect polyurathane silver metallic paint was applied. The interior has new dark blue Connelly hydes, a quality wool headliner and a perfect refinishing of the original walnut wood veneers. The bumpers and other brightwork were rechromed as required. The original Phillips multi-band radio was restored and an upgraded air conditioning system fitted. Being a shop that also prepares winning historic racing cars, our XJ-6's improvements were not limited to cosmetics. The engine was totally gone over; Isky street cams installed, as well as ported and polished cylinder heads and intake system. A mild shift-kit accompanied the transmission overhaul and improved road springs, anti-sway bars and Koni shocks has firmed up already excellent handling. Proving its pedigree, our Show Cat was driven hundreds of miles to several concours where it was judged second in JCNA National 2003 points! Was this an unrealistic restoration? Yes, if you don't love cars and the financial aspect is your only consideration. Is this a great buy in a superior XJ-6 Jaguar? If you love cars - most assuredly yes!

The father of jokes about warm beer and smoke escaping from wires is Joseph Lucas. Lucas died of typhoid after drinking infected water in Naples in 1902.

What disease did Lucas succumb to?
